THE CIRCULAR FUTURE – A RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE BUILDING INDUSTRY

If we are serious about taking part of the circular economy, we must turn words into action. Our climate commitment needs to be present already in the early stages of a building project. The environmental goals should act as a guideline throughout the entire process, and planning should be centered around the environemnt.  We do know that the climate effect is real. We, you and I, are all part of the cycle of earth. The future does not await us, Co2 emissions is a responsibility for everybody, never the least in the construction industry. By making concious choices that generates a low carboon footprint, the building industry can create a circular future with less waste and more recycling.

We are building globally, and we are demolishing globally - this is something that’ll always occur.

What needs to happen is that we must take care of what we’ve once built. A used aluminium frame for a window has not yet reached it’s end station. It can be disassembled and then recycled by being shredded, sorted and then melted into a new profile. This saves 95% of the energy compared to primary aluminium production. The windows we’re looking out through might as well be windows that someone else looked through in the past. We give old windows new life, in new buildings.

By always putting carboon footprints in focus, with everything from choice of material to energy calculations, you’re now able to get full control of the project’s climate impact. By using environmental declarations such as EPD you’re getting the possibility to get a full documentation of your environmental efforts. What if everyone took these efforts in consideration when both planning, performing and completing a project? We need to create a society were we take advantage of the resources that we’ve already got. We can’t ignore the environmental impact, nor the Co2 emissions, especally in the building industry were we are accountable for 40% of the global Co2 emissions. Circular products are literally the building bricks of the future.
